Tai Chi for Arthritis & Fall Prevention

Tai Chi for Arthritis & Fall Prevention is an evidence-based program developed by Dr. Paul Lam and the Tai Chi for Health Institute. Based on Sun Style Tai Chi, the program uses gentle, controlled movements to help improve balance, strength, flexibility, and mobility.

Designed to be accessible to people of varying ages and physical abilities, the program emphasizes safe, progressive learning and can be adapted to individual needs.

Who Can Participate

This program is open to adults of all ages and fitness levels. No previous tai chi experience is required. Movements can be adapted to accommodate different physical abilities, including participants who prefer to practice seated.

Benefits of the Program

Research has shown that tai chi can provide important health benefits, particularly for older adults and people with certain chronic conditions. Regular practice may help:

  • Improve balance and stability
  • Build strength and flexibility
  • Improve coordination and mobility
  • Reduce the risk of falls
  • Improve physical function and confidence in movement

Tai Chi for Arthritis & Fall Prevention emphasizes gentle, controlled movements that can be adapted to participants’ abilities. The goal is to develop skills that support better movement, physical function, and long-term health.

What to Expect in Class

Classes introduce the movements and principles of Sun Style Tai Chi through a structured, progressive approach. Students learn at a comfortable pace, with an emphasis on proper technique, balance, coordination, and controlled movement.

Exercises can be modified to accommodate different levels of physical ability, including participants who need to practice while seated. No previous tai chi or martial arts experience is necessary.

As students become familiar with the movements, they gradually develop a sequence that can be practiced independently to support continued improvement and lifelong physical activity.

Classes provide a welcoming and enjoyable environment where participants can learn at a comfortable pace, develop new skills, and experience the satisfaction of continued progress.
