What to Expect in Class
Classes combine Traditional Northern Shaolin Kung Fu and Contemporary Wushu in a structured, progressive training program. Students develop a strong foundation through fundamental techniques, stances, footwork, kicking, coordination exercises, flexibility, and physical conditioning.
As students progress, training includes traditional and contemporary forms, weapons, and practical applications. Traditional Northern Shaolin Kung Fu and Contemporary Wushu’s Changquan (Long Fist) discipline share many fundamental techniques and complement one another, allowing students to develop a broad range of martial arts skills.
Following the traditional martial arts approach, beginners and experienced students train together, learning from one another while receiving instruction appropriate to their experience and ability. Training emphasizes sound technique, discipline, mutual respect, and steady improvement, with the goal of developing skills that can be practiced and refined over a lifetime.
About the Instructor
Sifu David Scott, Jr. began martial arts training at age seven and grew up studying Traditional Northern Shaolin Kung Fu under his father, Master David Scott Sr., whose instruction established the foundation of his lifelong martial arts practice. He later expanded his training into Contemporary Wushu under Master Guo Jianhua in Chicago. Master Guo was a member and coach of the Hubei Professional Wushu Team in China.
With decades of martial arts practice and extensive teaching experience, Sifu Scott has served as Master Instructor at the Chinese Martial Arts Academy of Austin, Wushu Coach at the University of Texas at Austin, and Senior Kung Fu/Wushu Instructor at Austin Community College, among other instructional roles.
He is also a Certified Personal Trainer through the American Council on Exercise (ACE) and a Corrective Exercise Specialist through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). His instruction emphasizes strong fundamentals, sound technique, progressive training, and the development of skills that students can continue refining throughout their lives.
“What I liked most about the school is that it was individualized — I could work out according to my level and strength. David understood that each person was different, and had different goals and needs. So I could learn at my pace.”
